What Works: Weaver Brothers Beef Jerky

PAINESVILLE -- The Weaver Brothers, Dave and Mike, had a meat market in Mentor-on-the-Lake for fifteen years. Noticing how people came from miles around for their beef jerky, they decided they might be in the wrong business.

They opened Weaver Meats, a plant in Painesville, to make beef jerky and related meat snacks, and now they make six tons of their products each week and ship them all over the country.
And beef jerky is not just for cowboys and truck drivers any more.
"It's high protein, low carb, and it's 97 percent fat free. It's convenient, shelf stable and you don't have to worry about refrigeration," the brothers said.

When Continental Airlines discontinued free meals on its flights, they added a for-pay in-flight menu that includes sandwiches and salads and snack items.
Among the snacks are Wild Ride Cowboy Strips, beef jerky made by Weaver Brother, available at Gander Mountain, Sheetz and other retailers.

Though they market jerky and smokies under their own brands, Dave and Mikes, Grandpa's and Weaver Brothers, as well as Wild Ride, 90 per cent of their products are made for other companies to be marketed under their brand names.

Weaver Brothers makes Chubby Checker Beef Jerky, popular around the King of the Twist's hometown of Philadelphia, and exotic meat snacks from venison and elk for Cabella's Outdoor Stores.
