Halle History
Brothers Sam and Sal Halle were owners of the Halle Bros. Co. department store – a Cleveland tradition for more than 90 years. The doors to Halle’s are open no more, closing forever in 1982. Cherished memories, however, live on for Greater Clevelanders. Traveling Downtown to look at lavish window displays, visit with Mr. Jingeling, and shop at the Treasure House of Gifts was a local custom for decades. The seventh floor of the Halle store presented a magical experience during the holidays, one that Lake Metroparks has successfully recreated through a sparkling, nostalgic exhibit.

The history behind Penitentiary Glen Nature Center being selected to host this exhibit began in 1912, when Sam Halle and his wife, Blanche, purchased land in Kirtland, Ohio, for their summer estate and working farm. That land is now Penitentiary Glen Reservation, a park rich with cultural history and natural features, making it the ideal location for the Woodland Halle Days.
